I wish I was better at meal prepping, doing a weekly shop rather than traipsing down to the local Sainsbury’s or Tesco to pick up dinner costing me an arm and a leg, buying veggies that inevitably get thrown after a week because you only needed a small amount. So this weekend I was scrolling through Ocado adding a load of stuff and thought let’s take a look at the wine offerings. My supplies after a few weekends of hosting are dangerously low so I needed a stock up anyway.
Usually it would be a Majestic job but wanted to keep the cost down. And I found myself with decision paralysis, so many wines, tough to tell what was good and what wasn’t without just relying on price. Their selection is very very good if you know where to look. So - I’m going to take away the need to make a decision.
Here are six bottles worth adding to your next delivery — one for every mood, every meal, and every summers evening.
Sparkling – M&S Classics Crémant de Bourgogne Brut NV
£13.50
If you’re after Champagne vibes without the Champagne price, I’ve spoken about it before - Crémant is your best pal. This one from Burgundy (when you see Bourgogne that’s where it’s from) is full of green apple, toast, and nice gentle bubbles — ideal for aperitifs, sundowners, birthdays, Thursdays, you name it.
White #1 – M&S Myrtia Assyrtiko
£9.50
It’s zippy, saline, and citrus-charged — Assyrtiko is like a squeeze of lemon in your glass. This white punches above its weight on a hot summers day and brings a very clean, mineral edge that works with seafood, salty snacks or just by itself.
White #2 – Bowl Grabber Alvarinho, Portugal
£11.50
This Portuguese Alvarinho is crisp and light- one for the summer heat. Not only does it have the citrus you want from a Mediterranean white, but also hits with some nice stone fruits - peach and apricot flavouring. It’s probably worth getting a couple of these - I’m not sure it will touch the sides.
Rosé – Terra Cogita Languedoc Rosé
£10.50
I had never heard of this grape before - Cabernet Cortis, so it’s really intriguing and I’m keen to try it out - as should you if you so wish! Taking from the notes, it has notes of citrus and red berries. As with any rosé, perfectly pairs with grilled prawns, peppery lamb chops, or a watermelon and feta salad. Rule of thumb - drink the wine with what the locals eat, tends to work very well.
Red #1 – Guigal Côtes du Rhône Rouge 2020
£12.50
A Northern Rhône blend from one of the region’s great names - they have a very famous Hermitage - this is my go to special wine so to have one from the same producer at £12.50 is very exciting. It’s a classic GSM blend (Grenache, Syrah, Mouvedre), so it’s spicy, peppery, and loads of black fruit — great with sausages, roast veg, or just the end of a long day when you want a big serious glass of red wine.
Red #2 – Clos du Bois Merlot, California
£13.75
I know that California is renown for Cabernet Sauvignon- but for me on a summers evening, I want something a little juicier - slightly lower in tannin and full of fruit - so Merlot is a lovely alternative. Loads of black cherry, slightly spicy, and lightly toasted oak gives it a lovely finish. It’s a versatile grape so can pair wonderfully with grilled meats, a hearty pasta dish, or a lovely evening in.
Total basket cost: ~£75
That’s six solid wines you can just click on, add to basket, without supermarket roulette.
Have an amazing week!
